Accomplishments of the Rotary Club of Mineral Wells for the year 2022-2023
Rotary’s seven areas of focus are peace building and conflict prevention, basic education and literacy, disease prevention and treatment, water sanitation and hygiene, community economic development, maternal and child health, and supporting the environment. So, what did we, as the Rotary Club of Mineral Wells, achieve in the year 2022-2023 in these focus areas?
Peace Building and Conflict Prevention
• Erected 1,776 flags in the city of Mineral Wells over the course of the year to show patriotism to the community. Involved six youth organizations to help in this mission, and also provided them with $1,000 each to further their own missions: MWHS Interact Club, Project Graduation, MWHS Class of 2024, Zee’s American Tae Kwon Do, FUMC Youth Group, Indian Creek Baptist Youth Group, Sturdivant 4-H Club and MWHS Class of 2025.
• Donated $250 to Project Graduation, helping provide a safe celebration space for graduated seniors.
• Donated $150 to the Rotary Rose Parade Float bringing our message of “Service Above Self” and “People of Action” to over 40 million international viewers.
Basic Education and Literacy
• Provided 10 children with a bag full of school supplies by donating $200 to the Back-to-School Fair.
• Donated 49 books to the libraries of Houston elementary and Travis elementary schools.
• Read to 320 students in the classrooms of Houston elementary and Lamar elementary schools.
• Awarded $8,250 in scholarship funds to seven students at Mineral Wells High School and one student at Santo High School.
• Sent two students to Rotary Youth Leadership Award camp enhancing the students’ personal development, leadership skills, and good citizenship.
• Sponsored the James Wand Magic Show by donation of $500 to the Boyce Ditto Public Library’s summer reading program.
Disease Prevention and Treatment
• Donated $2,458 to Polio Plus to help eradicate polio in the only two countries that remain endemic: Afghanistan and Pakistan.
• Delivered 539 meals in partnership with Meals on Wheels to help improve the health, security, and independence of seniors and other homebound individuals.
Community Economic Development
• Hosted 34 community members as speakers at our club meetings to gain insight into their businesses and passions and so that we could become more well-rounded community members ourselves.
• Welcomed nine new members to our club.
• Welcomed countless guests to our weekly meetings.
• Hosted nearly 150 bicyclists at the Crazy Kicker Bike Ride where we raised $8,600 for us to put back into the community.
Maternal and Child Health
• Granted $2,708 to Grace House Ministries to purchase and print resources for their educational courses to support expecting parents and young families.
• Cooked pancakes and sausage to serve over 100 people at the Race for Grace, also supporting expecting parents and young families.
• Packed 273 packs for Backpack Buddies to help nourish students during the weekend when they are not at school.
Water Sanitation and Hygiene + Supporting the Environment
• Donated $7,543 to The Rotary Foundation to support programs that spur positive, lasting change. For example, Rotary clubs teamed up with local community leaders in Ghana to have clean water piped into remote villages, freeing women and children from spending hours searching for and fetching water.
