It has been two decades or more since Palo Pinto General Hospital had a spine and neurological surgeon, but one could say that specialty is "back" in Mineral Wells.

Dr. Steven Zielinski, or Dr. Z, of Waco-based Texas Spine and Neurosurgery, brought his practice to PPGH and the area several weeks ago and is now seeing patients regarding disorders and injuries involving the spine, peripheral nerves, carpal tunnel and other associated ailments.

Stanford-trained in vascular neurosurgery, Zielinski is not only founder and president of Texas Spine and Neurosurgery, he is founder and CEO of Zielinski Medical Technologies and founder and editor-in-chief of Texas Spine and Neurosurgery Journal. He has affiliations with 11 other Texas hospitals and has been medically licensed in Texas since 2007. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Neurological Surgery.

On Wednesday, he told Mineral Wells Rotarians he will basing regional services out of his PPGH office including visits, treatments and, when necessary, most surgeries. He said surgery is a last resort for him, and that typically surgery, such as cervical or lumbar fusions, is required in 20 percent or fewer of his patients.

He is the only spine and neurosurgeon operating within the region and he said he hopes to draw patients to his Mineral Wells practice from the Dallas-Fort Worth area, Granbury and Stephenville, Graham and other area towns and cities.

You can read more about Dr. Zielinski in an upcoming Mineral Wells Index article, and you can visit his Texas Spine and Neurosurgery website and learn more about Dr. Z, his education and background, treatments and medical approach at http://txspineonline.com/.
