Mineral Wells Rotarian and District 5790 Lt. Gov. Dan Steele, right, spoke to the Mineral Wells club Wednesday about his recent trip to Costa Rica to help provide wheelchairs.

The wheelchair program is one of the many community service endeavors of Rotary International to help people in underserved areas of the world. Many are homebound until they receive a new wheelchair from Rotary.

Dan said they delivered 116 wheelchairs to residents in Costa Rica, including six pediatric wheelchairs that are more expensive, but are able provide a custom fit and additional features for the boy or girl using it.

Nine Rotary clubs in District 5790, including Rotary Club of Mineral Wells, provided funds to purchase the wheel chairs and ship them to their destination. Dan was among about a dozen Rotarians from the district who went and took part in the delivery and distribution.

This is what it means to be a Rotarian. Whether it is helping to end polio worldwide, provide clean drinking water in impoverished areas of the world, provide wheelchairs to disabled or mobility challenged people or take part in local community service projects, Rotarians give and give back – financially and personally.
